Design in Public Places

"One month and seven hours of intense stenciling later and it’s up! With a lot of support from old and new friends, I turned the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood into a giant chalkboard where residents can write on the wall and remember what is important to them. Before I Die transforms neglected spaces into constructive ones where we can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around us. It turns out this entire process (including obtaining official approval from many entities) has been a great lesson, experience, and project in itself – more on that later. If you’re in New Orleans, stop by the corner of Marigny and Burgundy (900 Marigny Street) to add your thoughts to the wall and see what matters most to your neighbors. It’s a question that has changed me in the last year, and I believe the design of our public spaces can better reflect what’s important to us as residents and as human beings. The responses and stories from passersby while we were installing it have already hit me hard in the heart. More installations to come. Huge thanks to Kristina Kassem, Alan Williams, Cory Klemmer, Anamaria Vizcaino, James Reeves, Alex Vialou, and Gary Hustwit for installation assistance and many others for support along the way! Concurrently installed in East/West Galleries. A project site is in the works."

Reminds me of Professor Devine's public project in nyc
He put together objects given to him by random ppl around the city who wanted to contribute to the project. Once all of the objects were put together he dumped cement over the entire thing, waited it to dry, and uncovered the marks the objects made within the mold.

Exceptional Person: William Gold

Bill Gold

Bill Gold just finished a book on his 60+ year career as a movie poster designer. The book will be approx. 450 pages and focus on the finished posters as well as the art that no one, except studio marketing departments, has ever seen.

In a career spanning more than 60 years and more than 2,000 movie poster creations

I admire the fact that he's 90 years old and still wants to put his work out there for the public to see.

-Born in NYC January 3, 1921
-Studied at Pratt Institute in NYC
-Began his design career in 1941 in the advertising department at Warner Bros.
-1962 he created Bill Gold Advertising company in NYC
-In 1994 Bill was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Hollywood Reporter.

Facebook. A place for friends or business?

In 2005 when I first signed up for Facebook there were hardly any advertisements and it was JUST a place for friends. Now it's 2011 and instead of seeing new pictures of my friends I see advertisements for literally EVERYTHING. I'm also hearing that even when you update your privacy settings, businesses can still find a way to look at the information on your Facebook. The reason I personally love Facebook so much is because it connects me to my friends and it's a fun social way of staying in touch and sharing memories. I feel like it's lost it's fun and charm and has become my resume for businesses. I want to come up with a website solely for business purposes....a resume site if you will. Any thoughts? Am I the next Mark Zuckerberg? Eh, I'll keep dreaming.

Blogpost by a friend...

Absolute Originality; Unrealistic?
We all strive to be creative and original. Especially in the contemporary era. At times it even discourages me to show what I consider as my ‘original ideas’ to others, because it seems like it’s such a trend nowadays.

Sometimes we come up with amazing abstract ideas we’ve never heard about before, so we consider it as an original idea. But truth is, all ideas are triggered from others. This doesn’t neccessarily mean that you’ve coppied someone else’s idea piece to piece, it just means that you’ve heard or whitnessed something that has triggered a new idea in your head. All ideas in the world are related, and it’s our job, in a way, to unlock paths to reach those ideas. Our world is like a video game, with many paths to many solutions. All solutions are related and therefore connected, and all we need to do is follow certain paths and put our own ideas into it to be able to unlock more and more paths and therefore more and more solutions.

I guess what I’m trying to say is we simply need to realize and accept that all ideas are developed from others, and that it’s okay. Trying with all your might to be creative and original is always bound to be a failure. Take writing for example. In my creative class, at every class session my teacher gives us a 15 minute chunk of time for free style writing. Instead of trying to force out creativity, we are given a certain direction, a starting point, and we’re supposed to let our mind and our fingers do the rest. These are the times I develop my most creative writing. When I let go of a sense of control and absolute direction, and let my subconscious show me things I never knew, or took notice of. And I’ve realized that that very thing, the ability to let go and let your mind take over, is something I need to practice more. It becomes difficult not planning ahead, and therefore not knowing what’s going to happen next and in the future. This concept is something we’ve been taught all our lives; to plan ahead and follow that direction and get rid of all unpredictables. When I first signed up for this blog, I tried to sit down and plot the things I would talk about in each blog, and edit and reedit till I was satisfied. But i quickly realized that striving to be creative and original is nothing but a mistake. So from this moment on I’ll let my mind take over, and sit back and indulge in my twisted thoughts and try to make some sense out of it through my writing. And maybe someone else can read my material and let their subconscious get triggered to pour out new discoveries.

Not All Artists Are Starving Event

Just last week I went to HAGA's "Not All Artists Are Starving" event and I learned quite a bit. I got to hear from a panel of artists who shared their career struggles in the arts and how they became the successful innovators they are today. A couple things I learned...

1. Accept Criticism
2. Go for what you want, even if it kills you
3. Try out different jobs to find where you really fit
4. Do internships...lots of them.
5. Find out what you're good at and do it...a lot

I just hope that one day I will be able to talk to a room full of prospective art students and tell them the same thing. I guess we'll see!!
