Okay my last post about seth godin...
The thing I care the most about: what do you do when no one is looking, what do you make when it's not an immediate part of your job... how many push ups do you do, just because you can?
In his blog post, "Self Directed Effort is the Best Kind", is pretty self explanatory....and I don't know about you, but it definitely applies to me. I feel like I'm only productive when I'm being pushed by someone else. In high school I got up every morning at 4:30 to go to swim practice before school, then after school ended, swam for two more hours. I look back at that now and think I was crazy to be able to do all that, but I could just as well do it now if I put my mind to it. There are so many instances in my life where I think that I can only get things accomplished if I'm assigned to them by someone else, but I could create so much on my own time. I have to stop using all of my extra time to go on facebook, watch tv, and sleep..instead of those three time consuming activities, I could be creating beautiful pieces of art, learning more about the adobe suite programs, exercising...every.day. Seth Godin knows his S%#T!!! That is all. Get off your @$$ and make something beautiful:)
Peace, love, seth godin
When your brand starts falling behind a competitor (Dell vs. Apple, Microsoft vs. Google, Washington Mutual vs. Everyone and then Apple vs. Android, Google vs. Facebook)... you say it's not fair, nor expected.
The problem with brand exceptionalism is that once you believe it, it's almost impossible to innovate. Innovation involves failure, which an exceptional brand shouldn't do, and the only reason to endure failure is to get ahead, which you don't need to do. Because you're exceptional.
In the battle for attention or market share, the market makes new decisions every day. And the market tends to be selfish. Often, it will pick the arrogant market leader (because the market also tends to be lazy), but upstarts and new competitors always have an incentive to change the game or the story.
Brand humility is the only response to a fast-changing and competitive marketplace. The humble brand understands that it needs to re-earn attention, re-earn loyalty and reconnect with its audience as if every day is the first day.
Seth Godin never ceases to amaze me with his words of wisdom...he knows how to execute every situation and is constantly giving the best advice. Everyone should read his posts daily because who knows..you might learn a thing or two

As told by the great Seth Godin....
The flip side
It's impossible to have a coin with only one side. You can't have heads without tails.
Innovation is like that. Initiative is like that. Art is like that.
You can't have success unless you're prepared to have failure.
As soon as you say, "failure is not an option," you've just said, "innovation is not an option."

Design in Public Places
"One month and seven hours of intense stenciling later and it’s up! With a lot of support from old and new friends, I turned the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood into a giant chalkboard where residents can write on the wall and remember what is important to them. Before I Die transforms neglected spaces into constructive ones where we can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around us. It turns out this entire process (including obtaining official approval from many entities) has been a great lesson, experience, and project in itself – more on that later. If you’re in New Orleans, stop by the corner of Marigny and Burgundy (900 Marigny Street) to add your thoughts to the wall and see what matters most to your neighbors. It’s a question that has changed me in the last year, and I believe the design of our public spaces can better reflect what’s important to us as residents and as human beings. The responses and stories from passersby while we were installing it have already hit me hard in the heart. More installations to come. Huge thanks to Kristina Kassem, Alan Williams, Cory Klemmer, Anamaria Vizcaino, James Reeves, Alex Vialou, and Gary Hustwit for installation assistance and many others for support along the way! Concurrently installed in East/West Galleries. A project site is in the works."
Reminds me of Professor Devine's public project in nyc
He put together objects given to him by random ppl around the city who wanted to contribute to the project. Once all of the objects were put together he dumped cement over the entire thing, waited it to dry, and uncovered the marks the objects made within the mold.

Exceptional Person: William Gold
Bill Gold
Bill Gold just finished a book on his 60+ year career as a movie poster designer. The book will be approx. 450 pages and focus on the finished posters as well as the art that no one, except studio marketing departments, has ever seen.
In a career spanning more than 60 years and more than 2,000 movie poster creations
I admire the fact that he's 90 years old and still wants to put his work out there for the public to see.
-Born in NYC January 3, 1921
-Studied at Pratt Institute in NYC
-Began his design career in 1941 in the advertising department at Warner Bros.
-1962 he created Bill Gold Advertising company in NYC
-In 1994 Bill was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Hollywood Reporter.

Facebook. A place for friends or business?
In 2005 when I first signed up for Facebook there were hardly any advertisements and it was JUST a place for friends. Now it's 2011 and instead of seeing new pictures of my friends I see advertisements for literally EVERYTHING. I'm also hearing that even when you update your privacy settings, businesses can still find a way to look at the information on your Facebook. The reason I personally love Facebook so much is because it connects me to my friends and it's a fun social way of staying in touch and sharing memories. I feel like it's lost it's fun and charm and has become my resume for businesses. I want to come up with a website solely for business purposes....a resume site if you will. Any thoughts? Am I the next Mark Zuckerberg? Eh, I'll keep dreaming.

Blogpost by a friend...
Absolute Originality; Unrealistic?
We all strive to be creative and original. Especially in the contemporary era. At times it even discourages me to show what I consider as my ‘original ideas’ to others, because it seems like it’s such a trend nowadays.
Sometimes we come up with amazing abstract ideas we’ve never heard about before, so we consider it as an original idea. But truth is, all ideas are triggered from others. This doesn’t neccessarily mean that you’ve coppied someone else’s idea piece to piece, it just means that you’ve heard or whitnessed something that has triggered a new idea in your head. All ideas in the world are related, and it’s our job, in a way, to unlock paths to reach those ideas. Our world is like a video game, with many paths to many solutions. All solutions are related and therefore connected, and all we need to do is follow certain paths and put our own ideas into it to be able to unlock more and more paths and therefore more and more solutions.
I guess what I’m trying to say is we simply need to realize and accept that all ideas are developed from others, and that it’s okay. Trying with all your might to be creative and original is always bound to be a failure. Take writing for example. In my creative class, at every class session my teacher gives us a 15 minute chunk of time for free style writing. Instead of trying to force out creativity, we are given a certain direction, a starting point, and we’re supposed to let our mind and our fingers do the rest. These are the times I develop my most creative writing. When I let go of a sense of control and absolute direction, and let my subconscious show me things I never knew, or took notice of. And I’ve realized that that very thing, the ability to let go and let your mind take over, is something I need to practice more. It becomes difficult not planning ahead, and therefore not knowing what’s going to happen next and in the future. This concept is something we’ve been taught all our lives; to plan ahead and follow that direction and get rid of all unpredictables. When I first signed up for this blog, I tried to sit down and plot the things I would talk about in each blog, and edit and reedit till I was satisfied. But i quickly realized that striving to be creative and original is nothing but a mistake. So from this moment on I’ll let my mind take over, and sit back and indulge in my twisted thoughts and try to make some sense out of it through my writing. And maybe someone else can read my material and let their subconscious get triggered to pour out new discoveries.

Not All Artists Are Starving Event
Just last week I went to HAGA's "Not All Artists Are Starving" event and I learned quite a bit. I got to hear from a panel of artists who shared their career struggles in the arts and how they became the successful innovators they are today. A couple things I learned...
1. Accept Criticism
2. Go for what you want, even if it kills you
3. Try out different jobs to find where you really fit
4. Do internships...lots of them.
5. Find out what you're good at and do it...a lot
I just hope that one day I will be able to talk to a room full of prospective art students and tell them the same thing. I guess we'll see!!

NY Times Article: Phones Try to Stand Out in a Crowd
Source
By JENNA WORTHAM
Published: February 16, 2011
Jenna Wortham asks the question, "how do you stand out from the crowd when most phones are near-identical glassy rectangles?"
“At the end of the day, there’s only so much you can do with a piece of glass,” said Chris Jones, an analyst with the research firm Canalys. “Software can make or break a phone.”
According to Wortham, "hardware makers are being forced to find new ways to appeal to buyers who are less interested in particulars like processor speeds than in what applications the devices can run, and how easily they can access their e-mail and Facebook on it."
What do you look for when you are buying a new phone? What's important to you? Facebook or a longer charge?

What's the time?
Always Sunny in Philadelphia: At the beginning of each episode, a black screen comes up and it tells you the day and time of the episode taking place. Time is a very important part of every day life to people and it just shows order in your life. It almost gives you a picture in your head of a schedule and is a good way of introducing a scenario for you. We've been talking a lot about scenarios and putting a time to it really adds that much more to the scenario. To add to that, a lot of opening sequences adds a lot to an episode, the timing, the effectiveness of it, the aesthetic flow, etc.

The New SKINNY CAN
"Diet Pepsi has introduced a new "skinny" can for Fashion Week, but some critics are giving it a big, fat "no."
The can is a "taller, sassier" version of the traditional can that the company says was made in "celebration of beautiful, confident women." Some say Pepsi's approach only reinforces dangerous stereotypes about women and body image." -Sarah Skidmore
I found that a lot of the skinny can freezers were found in fashionable boutiques and hair salons.
Is the new skinny pepsi innovative and exciting or is it offensive and unoriginal? What are your thoughts?

Values
Are you doing what you believe in? What are your values? How far would you go to lose a sense of what you truly believe? Losing money doing what you love? Or losing money doing what you hate?
Life of a designer....business man/art
people have a sense of where they fit in that spectrum
Designers create commonalities, counterposition to social media/other related medias. Designers are about finding shared experiences, shared values.
Sharing of experiences, a way to prevent people from fighting each other. Part of designers can do
A single Experience
Artists provide a gift to culture...so we can have a common gift
Role of artists in history
a counter way to the self absorption to only satisfying short time hype and talk
you have the ability to translate ideas from one idea to the other
TOGETHER.

Superbowl Commercials Family Friendly?
I'm a Packers fan so the entirety of the Superbowl was absolute bliss, but there are a few things I would've changed about it if I COULD...
For instance, Christina Aguilera...come on, enough with the vocals, just sing the damn song. Black Eyed Peas were AWFUL, the best thing about that performance were the light up people, but they completely tore apart a perfectly good Guns N' Roses song. Now, on to the real problem I had with the Superbowl. What was going on with the commercials?! I thought the Superbowl was supposed to be family friendly. I'm almost 21 years old and I felt uncomfortable watching the Superbowl with my family. I understand that sex sells, but has it gone TOO far? Check out the videos below and see what you think!
